Hiking in the Ardennes: Practical Tips and Scenic Routes
The Ardennes is one of the most beautiful hiking regions in Belgium. Vast forests, rolling hills, rivers, and charming villages define the landscape. Thanks to the well-maintained network of hiking trails, you can fully enjoy nature here. Below are some tips and suggestions for rewarding hikes:
Popular Hiking Areas
High Fens (Signal de Botrange)
This nature reserve is located at the highest point in Belgium (694 m). You'll hike over wooden boardwalks through moorlands, heath, and forest. The trail to the viewpoint at Baraque Michel is especially popular.
Semois Valley (Vallée de la Semois)
Near Bouillon and Rochehaut, you can enjoy beautiful walks along river bends, rocky cliffs, and scenic viewpoints. The hike to the “Tombeau du Géant” offers a spectacular panorama.
La Roche-en-Ardenne
Around this popular tourist town, you'll find many hiking routes – for example, to the viewpoint Le Hérou with steep cliffs above the Ourthe River.
Ninglinspo
The Ninglinspo is Belgium's only mountain stream. The trail along the river near Aywaille is beloved for its adventurous terrain with footbridges, rocks, and natural waterfalls.
Trail Markings and Maps
Most routes are well marked with coloured signs or symbols. Still, it’s a good idea to use a detailed hiking map or an app like Komoot, RouteYou, or GPX Viewer, which show your location and elevation changes.
Best Time to Go & Equipment
Spring and autumn are ideal: not too hot, with beautiful natural colours. In winter, many trails are muddy or snowy, especially in the High Fens.
Always wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Bring a rain jacket, enough water, snacks, a power bank, and possibly trekking poles. A map or GPS is highly recommended, as mobile reception may be limited in some areas.
Respect for Nature
Stick to marked trails, don’t leave any waste, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Dogs are usually welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
