5 most beautiful mountain villages in Provence: solitude with a view

Panoramablick auf das historische Dorf Les Baux-de-Provence mit seinen Felsen und Burgruinen inmitten der Provence

Mountain villages of Provence aren't places you simply "visit." You reach them slowly on winding roads, through pine forests and lavender fields, and you quickly realize that the clocks tick differently here. Those looking for villages in Provence that aren't overcrowded will find them in the heights.

The air is clearer, the view is wider, life is quieter. And yet there's no lack of character: Between old stone houses, small studios, and simple bistros lies exactly what many travelers in the south seek in vain: true peace and style.

In this article, we introduce you to five mountain villages in Provence that particularly touched us. Places that aren't loud, but resonate long afterward.

The 5 most beautiful villages in the mountains of Provence

Those seeking peace and quiet will find it here! On a hill, in a quiet garden, or between stone walls that tell stories.

Five of our guests shared their very own insider tips for mountain villages in Provence with us. Places that don't shine with sights, but with atmosphere, views, and the feeling of finally having arrived.

Here are their favorites – with tips you won't find in any travel guide.

1. Saignon: Quiet charm with a distant view

Saignon sits on a rocky outcrop above Apt and looks like a painting: narrow streets, lavender along the roadside, the Notre-Dame-de-Pitié church, and a famous panoramic view of the Luberon Valley.

Why we loved it: Time seems to stand still here. No traffic noise, hardly any tourists, but cafés serving croissants and quiet courtyards where the light dances.

Tip from guest Nora:

"Getting a baguette from the small village bakery first thing in the morning and then sitting and enjoying the view of the valley. That was my favorite moment!"

Don't miss:

  • Notre-Dame-de-Pitié Church
  • Weekly market in Apt, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (10-minute drive)
  • Stroll through the surrounding vineyards
  • Market in Saignon, every Thursday morning (from April 1 to October 31, 2025)

2. Ménerbes: Art, Wine, and Stone Poetry

Ménerbes sits enthroned on a narrow ridge amidst the Luberon hills. Known from Peter Mayle's Provence novels, the village has nevertheless retained a quiet, sophisticated charm.

Why we loved it: Although it's one of the more well-known villages, Ménerbes never feels overcrowded. Instead, you can sense a creative energy here: in the galleries, the architecture, and the way guests are welcomed.

Tip from guest Luc:

"The terrace of the Domaine de la Citadelle (Botanical Garden) is magical at sunset. And the corkscrew museum? Unexpectedly entertaining!"

Don't miss:

  • Wine tasting at the Domaine de la Citadelle
  • Domaine de la Citadelle Botanical Garden
  • View over the Luberon Valley from the western exit of the village

3. Le Poët-Laval: History with a View

Le Poët-Laval is one of the most authentic mountain villages in Provence. It's a medieval village high above the Jabron Valley in the Drôme Provençale. Cobbled streets, bright stone houses, and an old castle give the place an almost cinematic atmosphere, far removed from traditional tourism.

Why we loved it: You can feel the connection between history and the present here. The village is lively but not overcrowded. Instead of a touristy backdrop, there are real discoveries for those who like to look, listen, and linger.

Tip from guest Isabelle:

"A homemade cake at the Hôtel Les Hospitaliers – Salon de Thé with a panoramic view was my little highlight. Afterward, I spent almost an hour in the museum – all alone, in complete peace."

Don't miss:

  • Museum of Protestant History in the former Temple House
  • Yvon Morin Art Center with numerous exhibitions
  • Walk to the castle ruins with a panoramic view

4. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie: Between Gorge, Star, and Tranquility

At the edge of the Gorges du Verdon, nestled between two rocky cliffs, lies Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, one of the most impressive villages in Provence. Its location alone is spectacular: a golden star hovers above the mountain village, stretched between two mountain peaks. Below, the clear Riou stream flows through the alleys, past stone staircases, fountains, and small craft shops.

Why we loved it: Despite its fame, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie remains a place with soul. Especially in the mornings and evenings, when the day-trippers have moved on, the village unfolds its special atmosphere: tranquil, sublime, almost mystical.

Tip from guest Henri:

"Get up early, get a croissant in the village, and then head all the way up to the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir Chapel. The view back to the village in the first sunlight truly took my breath away."

Don't miss:

  • Climb the 262 stone steps to the chapel
  • Visit one of the faience workshops
  • Viewpoint over the Gorges du Verdon (Distance: 7km): Pont du Galetas – a bridge with impressive views of the gorge and the lake.

5. Mons: Views to the Sea

Mons lies high above the Côte d'Azur, almost like a silent observer over the Riviera. This small, often overlooked village in Provence offers distant views as far as the Mediterranean on clear days – and at the same time, a soothing tranquility that few people associate with the region.

The streets are narrow, the paving uneven, the houses built of old stone. There's a village fountain, small restaurants, bakeries, and plenty of space for reflection. Ideal for those who enjoy reading, hiking, or simply taking a deep breath.

Why we loved it: Mons is charmingly unpretentious. There's no photo opportunity chasing after the next; instead, it's a village that takes its time – and gives you some of its own.

Tip from guest Sophie:

"I sat on a bench in front of the church in the early evening and just gazed. Airplane mode on, thoughts off. Just the view and the breeze. Better than any spa."

Don't miss:

  • Panoramic views from the "Table d'Orientation" viewpoint: Views of the Lérins Islands, the Esterel Mountains, and Corsica in good weather.
  • Walk along the GR49 long-distance hiking trail
  • Lunch at Le Petit Bonheur, right in the village center

Mountain landscape near Mons – natural panorama in the South of France with panoramic views and tranquility

Why mountain villages are so fascinating: Because silence meets beauty!

What makes these mountain villages in Provence so special? It's not just the view, it's the feeling of being a few meters above the noise of the world.

Up here, the day seems to have more hours. The coffee tastes slower, the conversations are more direct, and thoughts are more expansive. Instead of sights to check off, there are spaces to linger.

Many of these villages in Provence thrive on tranquility and their surroundings: vineyards, lavender fields, forests, old dry-stone walls. And yet, you'll almost always find:

  • a good restaurant
  • a brocante shop full of stories
  • a terrace with a view

Que ce soit pour écrire, travailler, faire de la randonnée ou simplement se détendre : quiconque s'est déjà réveillé dans l'un de ces endroits du sud de la France sait ce que signifie vraiment ralentir.

Practical tips for your stay in the mountain villages of Provence

To make your trip as relaxing as it is impressive, you'll find the most important information here.

The best time to travel is between April and June, as well as September and October. During these months, the weather is mild, nature is lush, and the villages aren't yet overrun by tourist groups. Ideal for hikes, markets, and café visits with panoramic views.

As for getting there, you should opt for a car. Many villages are only accessible via small country roads, and public transport runs infrequently or not at all. Download offline maps and take your time for the journey: Often, the journey through lavender fields and pine groves is an experience in itself.

Food also needs to be planned. If you want to buy local produce, the best option is to use the nearby weekly markets for fresh vegetables, goat cheese, olives, and bread. This way, your picnic basket will be filled with Provence.

For longer stays, we recommend accommodation that's a perfect fit for the location—a quiet location, well-equipped, and with a genuine atmosphere. Our hand-picked holiday homes at Casapilot offer just that: stylish retreats, close to nature, and space to unwind.
